St George's Square

Pause in the open square before the Grand Master’s Palace; the palace interior has separate tickets and hours.

What to expect

St George’s Square is the open forecourt of the Grand Master’s Palace, at the heart of Valletta. The square is a useful place to read the city’s limestone architecture and see the Palace frontage; it also hosts state and civic occasions, so furniture, barriers or access can change for events. Entering the Palace is a separate, paid visit rather than part of the square walk.

Entry and costs

The outdoor square is free to walk through. The Palace, Armoury and State Rooms require separate tickets; Heritage Malta currently lists adult Palace admission at €12.

Visitor notes

Heritage Malta says rare state functions can close the Palace and publishes dated room restrictions; as of this check, the Throne Room remained closed and some State Room visits begin after 13:30 on listed dates. These notices concern the paid Palace interior, not routine access to the square. Check the operator’s live page before buying a ticket, and leave space for official events.
