What to expect

San Miniato al Monte is a working Benedictine abbey on one of Florence's highest viewpoints. The early-thirteenth-century façade uses white and green marble; inside, look for the Byzantine-style apse mosaic, zodiac panel in the inlaid floor, the crypt and the raised presbytery. The photograph is a view from the abbey grounds across the city, not a close view of the basilica façade.

Entry and costs

Entry to the basilica is free and no reservation is required. Donations are welcome; special events or other services may have separate arrangements.

Visitor notes

The abbey's current visitor hours are Monday–Saturday 09:30–13:00 and 15:30–19:00; Sunday 08:15–13:00 and 15:30–19:00. Visitors are not admitted during liturgy. The climb from the centre is steep; the abbey recommends the Via delle Porte Sante approach for elderly and disabled visitors, and lists bus 12 from Santa Maria Novella to Piazzale Michelangelo. Contact the abbey for route-specific access needs.
