Walk the lake edge past the Coronation Fountain, picnic lawns and boat activity in this long-running Saxonwold park.

What to expect

Zoo Lake opened to the public in 1908, on land donated for a public park beside the city zoo. Today the loop is a local place for a walk, a picnic or a stop by the Coronation Fountain; the park manager also lists boat rides, canoeing, a play area and a sports club among its facilities. The lake and the Johannesburg Zoo share a neighbourhood, but they are separate visits.

The City specifically included Zoo Lake among parks with free access on Heritage Day 2026; the current JCPZ park profile does not state an ordinary-day gate price. Check current notices before a date-specific visit. Boat rides, food, sports-club facilities, events and entry to the separately managed Johannesburg Zoo may cost extra.
