What to expect

Stephansplatz is the pedestrian heart of Vienna's old centre, with St Stephen's Cathedral filling the view across the square. Its patterned roof and 136 m south tower make the exterior the main free stop; sightseeing inside, climbing the towers and catacomb tours are separate visits with their own fees and schedules. The square works as a natural starting point for nearby streets, but the Ringstrasse and Stadtpark are separate walks.

The public square and exterior views are free. Cathedral sightseeing, tower visits and catacomb tours have separate admission and schedules; worship services take priority inside.

Visitor notes

The cathedral's general church hours are longer than its tourist sightseeing windows. The operator currently lists sightseeing Monday–Saturday 09:00–11:30 and 13:00–16:30, and Sundays/holidays 13:00–16:30, subject to liturgical and operational changes. The official Vienna visitor guide says the main entrance is step-free; the South Tower has 343 steps and is not wheelchair-accessible. Recheck the cathedral's calendar before going inside.
