What to expect

Sanam Luang is a historic civic field between the Grand Palace and the former Front Palace district. Its scale and open grass make the contrast with Bangkok’s dense streets immediately clear; the field has served as a ceremonial ground, public park and gathering place. This outing covers the public grounds only, so it does not include entry to the Grand Palace, the National Museum or nearby religious sites.

The BMA lists free admission to Sanam Luang. Nearby palace, museum and temple interiors have separate entry rules and prices; major ceremonies or public events may affect access to the field.

Visitor notes

Greener Bangkok lists the grounds open daily 05:00–22:00. Royal ceremonies, security arrangements and events can close or limit sections at short notice; check official notices and follow barriers or staff directions. There is little shade across the open field, so bring water and avoid the hottest part of the day.
