Prater and Hauptallee

Walk Vienna's 4.5 km chestnut-lined avenue through the free Green Prater; rides are separate.

What to expect

The Prater is a large recreation landscape east of the centre. Its 4.5 km Hauptallee runs between Praterstern and the Lusthaus beneath roughly 2,500 trees; meadows, woods and waterways branch off the broad avenue. The Wurstelprater amusement district sits beside the green park, so a quiet walk and a ride-filled visit can be planned separately.

Entry and costs

The Green Prater and Wurstelprater have free public access. Individual rides, the Giant Ferris Wheel, food, rentals and parking cost extra.

Visitor notes

The Prater grounds are accessible around the clock all year. The amusement businesses generally open daily from 15 March to 31 October; winter schedules vary and many businesses close in January. Check the individual attraction before travelling. Vienna's 13 km City Hiking Trail 9 is a much longer route than a short Hauptallee stroll.
