What to expect

Nishiki Market runs for about 400 metres from Teramachi to Takakura and is lined with shops selling fish, meat, dried foods, prepared dishes, yuba and Kyoto vegetables. The arcade is an active shopping street, not a single venue with shared opening hours. Walking through costs nothing; food and other purchases are optional.

The market association says the shopping street has no common closing day: each shop sets its own hours, many shops close on Wednesdays, and many are closed January 1–3. Kyoto Travel and the association ask visitors not to eat while walking; stop at the shop where you bought food or take it away. The route is crowded and not fully barrier-free.
