National Mall

A free, open-air route through memorial grounds, with a long walk between the Capitol and Lincoln Memorial.

What to expect

The National Mall is more than a lawn between monuments: National Park Service grounds include memorials, gardens and broad lawns across the centre of Washington. Use it as an outdoor route, then choose one or two indoor stops instead of trying to see every museum in a single pass. The western memorials, central museums and Capitol-side Botanic Garden are distinct parts of the day.

Entry and costs

Outdoor grounds and NPS memorial sites are free. Entry to the Washington Monument observation deck requires a timed ticket; museums, transport, food, event services and paid tours have separate terms. NPS can close or reroute areas for security, maintenance, weather or permitted events.

Visitor notes

Most outdoor sites are open 24 hours, but visitor services and indoor memorial spaces keep separate hours. NPS lists the Washington Monument as open 09:00–17:00 with a monthly maintenance closure, and may post additional special closures. Check the current Mall and monument notices before planning a timed visit; bring water and plan shade or rest stops for the exposed central walk.
