Meiji Jingu Shrine Grounds

A forested shrine approach and peaceful wooded grounds a few minutes from Harajuku.

What to expect

Walk beneath the large torii gates along a broad gravel approach through a planted forest of roughly 100,000 trees, then visit the shrine buildings. It feels far removed from Harajuku's busy streets despite the short walk from the station.

Entry and costs

There is no admission fee to visit the shrine grounds. The Inner Garden and Meiji Jingu Museum have separate admission charges; food, gifts and ceremonial services are optional costs.

Visitor notes

The shrine grounds open at sunrise and close at sunset, so hours change monthly (November: 06:10–16:10). The Inner Garden and museum have shorter hours. Allow about ten minutes to walk from an entrance to the main shrine, and do not photograph directly in front of the prayer hall.
