Margaret Island

A nearly 100-hectare park island between Buda and Pest, with gardens, ruins and river paths.

What to expect

Margaret Island is about 2.8 kilometres long and close to 100 hectares, with public walking and cycling routes between the river bridges. The city visitor guide highlights the Dominican convent ruins, Japanese Garden, 1911 Water Tower and Musical Fountain. The fountain is presented as a seasonal feature from May; the guide does not give a firm annual changeover date, so do not count on a show outside its operating season. The photo on this page shows the Centenary Monument boat landing, rather than the island’s gardens.

Entry and costs

The island’s outdoor public grounds and paths are free to explore. The Water Tower, pools, bike hire, cafés, performances and other facilities may charge or keep seasonal hours.

Visitor notes

Margaret Bridge provides a wheelchair-accessible route onto the island; low-floor bus 26 runs across it, but the city visitor guide notes that not all stops are accessible. Accessible toilets are listed at both ends: north 08:00–20:00 and south around the clock. At the 1 November 2026 check, BKV’s current riverboat notice said boats were temporarily skipping the Centenary Monument pier because of low Danube water; use the bridge or bus and recheck BKV before planning a boat arrival.
