What to expect

Kyoto Imperial Palace is a separate visit from the surrounding Kyoto Gyoen National Garden. The Imperial Household Agency allows walk-in visitors without advance arrangements and charges no admission; visitors follow a one-way gravel route through the palace grounds, but cannot enter the buildings. Free guided tours last about 50 minutes and run at set times, including English tours at 10:00 and 14:00, subject to crowding.

Walk-in admission and the scheduled guided tours are free. Special arrangements for groups may require advance contact; transport and nearby services are separate.

Visitor notes

The Agency lists regular closures on Mondays (with a Tuesday closure instead when Monday is a national holiday) and December 28–January 4; weather or court functions can also close the route without notice. Security checks are required. Wear comfortable shoes for gravel paths; wheelchairs are available from staff. The page does not publish daily visitor opening hours, so check its live calendar before going.
