A free, open-anytime national garden in central Kyoto, with long gravel paths and historic sites.

What to expect

Kyoto Gyoen is the large national garden around Kyoto Imperial Palace, measuring about 1.3 km north to south and 0.7 km east to west. Its open paths, trees and historic sites make it a destination in its own right; the palace route, tea house, exhibition rooms and sports facilities have separate visitor arrangements. The garden is free and open at any time, so check the individual facility pages if one of those is your main reason for coming.

Entry and costs

Kyoto Gyoen National Garden is free to enter. Tea-house visits, sports facilities and other managed services may have separate fees or reservation requirements.

Visitor notes

The Ministry of the Environment says the garden is open anytime and lists rules including keeping dogs leashed, not feeding animals and not flying drones. The gravel paths are extensive; check the official garden map and separate facility hours before visiting a specific building.
