Kastellet and the Little Mermaid

Pair the star-shaped historic citadel's public paths with the waterfront walk to Copenhagen's best-known sculpture.

What to expect

Kastellet is both a public historic fortress and an active military workplace. Its paths and ramparts are open for walking, but military buildings are not all open to visitors. From there, continue to the separate Langelinie promenade and the Little Mermaid, unveiled in 1913; the statue sits by the water rather than inside the citadel.

Entry and costs

Walking the public fortress grounds and Langelinie promenade is free. Museums, guided visits, events, food and transport are separate; follow military-site signs and do not enter restricted buildings.

Visitor notes

The Danish Defence lists Kastellet's gates as open 06:00–20:00 in the winter half of the year and 06:00–22:00 in the summer half, without specifying transition dates on the visitor page. Event, security and military activity may change access; check the official notice close to your visit. VisitCopenhagen places the Mermaid on Langelinie, around a 15-minute walk from Østerport Station.
