Jardins do Palácio de Cristal
Follow camellia paths, formal terraces and a wooded garden to overlooks above the Douro.
What to expect
Designed by Émil David for the 19th-century Crystal Palace grounds, these gardens pair formal planting with an informal woodland and balconies above the Douro. The original iron-and-glass palace was demolished in 1951; the garden survives with fountains, sculptures, camellias and the rose garden. A public library, playground and cafés add useful stops, but the river views and quieter paths are the main reason to come uphill from the centre.
