Gran Vía architecture walk
A free central walk past Madrid's theatres and early twentieth-century landmarks, with busy crossings and shops along the route.
What to expect
Gran Vía was built in three phases between 1910 and 1931, cutting a broad route through Madrid’s older street pattern. From Callao toward Plaza de España, look for the Capitol building, theatres and early twentieth-century façades; at the eastern end, Metrópolis marks the junction with Calle de Alcalá. Pavements were widened and crossings improved, but this remains a busy avenue, so follow signals and expect crowds.
