Follow cobbled lanes toward Stortorget, Stockholm's oldest square, and the waterfront.

What to expect

Gamla Stan is Stockholm's old town on an island in the city centre, founded in the 13th century. Narrow lanes and closely packed façades lead toward Stortorget, the city's oldest square, with the Royal Palace and Stockholm Cathedral nearby. Leave the main shopping streets for quieter side lanes, but remember this is a lived-in neighbourhood, not a museum courtyard.
