French Quarter architecture walk
Take a self-guided loop past cast-iron balconies, courtyards and varied Creole-era façades in the Vieux Carré.
What to expect
The French Quarter is an 85-square-block historic district between Canal Street, Esplanade Avenue, North Rampart Street and the Mississippi. Its streets show several layers of architecture rather than one uniform French style: the National Park Service highlights the district’s street plan and the features visitors can spot along its carriageway, while the city tourism guide points out the Spanish-era influence and landmark buildings. Start at Jackson Square, follow Chartres and Royal Streets for balconies and courtyards, then use the quieter cross streets to make a loop; indoor museums and historic houses are optional paid stops.
