Foz do Douro promenade

Walk the exposed Douro mouth at Foz, where a beach and breakwater lead toward the Farolim de Felgueiras beacon.

What to expect

Foz marks where the Douro meets the Atlantic. A public seafront walk passes beaches, sea walls, the Felgueiras lighthouse and gardens; this photo shows the breakwater beacon from the beach below. Visit Porto presents the western waterfront as a walking area and suggests the riverside tram between Ribeira and Passeio Alegre, making Foz a separate trip from the old centre rather than a short detour.

Entry and costs

The public shore and promenade are free to walk. The tram, bicycle hire, food, beach services and entry inside the Douro Quay Beacon are paid separately; the beacon's posted hours and fee do not apply to the whole promenade.

Visitor notes

The waterfront is exposed to Atlantic weather and waves. Check the Portuguese IPMA marine bulletin and local beach flags before walking near the water, and keep off closed or wave-washed sea walls. Visit Porto lists bus routes 200 and 500 and tram line 1 for reaching Foz; transport fares apply.
