Escadaria Selarón
Follow a mosaic staircase of more than 200 steps between Lapa and Santa Teresa.
What to expect
Jorge Selarón, a Chilean artist who made Rio his home, covered this long public staircase with colourful tiles from Brazil and around the world. It climbs between Joaquim Silva Street in Lapa and Pinto Martins Street in Santa Teresa, a short walk from the Arcos da Lapa. The stairs are both a working neighbourhood route and an artwork, so give residents room to pass and take photographs without blocking the steps.
