Dataran Merdeka

A free, open public square at the centre of Kuala Lumpur’s independence story.

What to expect

Dataran Merdeka, or Merdeka Square, is the broad civic lawn opposite the Sultan Abdul Samad Building. The flagpole marks the site associated with the lowering of the Union Flag and raising of the Malaysian flag at independence in 1957. The square is part of a larger heritage walk that includes the Royal Selangor Club, St Mary’s Cathedral and the River of Life; indoor visits have their own arrangements.

Entry and costs

Walking the square and viewing surrounding façades from public space are free. Building interiors, exhibitions, parking, food and ticketed events are separate.

Visitor notes

Tourism Malaysia lists the public square as open around the clock. Ceremonies, road closures, maintenance or major events can restrict access; check DBKL notices before setting out and use marked crossings around the civic district.
