What to expect

Copacabana's broad beach runs for almost four kilometres between Leme Fort and Copacabana Fort. Its wave-patterned stone sidewalk is a city landmark in its own right: stroll beside the sand, use the numbered beach posts to orient yourself, and watch local life along the avenue. The photo on this page shows the mosaic promenade near Rua Santa Clara, not a generic Rio beach view.

Entry and costs

The public beach and promenade are free to use. Food and drinks, beach chairs and umbrellas, equipment hire, parking and the forts or other indoor attractions cost extra.

Visitor notes

Riotur says the waterfront road also closes to traffic on Sundays from 07:00 to 18:00, when it becomes available for leisure. For swimming, check the state environment agency's current bathing-water bulletin and local lifeguard flags; the agency advises avoiding the sea for 24 hours after heavy rain and near drainage outlets.
