Chicago Riverwalk

Walk 1.25 miles of free riverfront path, open daily from 6 am to 11 pm.

What to expect

The City’s 1.25-mile Riverwalk is a continuous public path from Lake Street to the lakefront, below Upper Wacker Drive. Its four named districts—the Confluence, Arcade, Civic and Esplanade—give the route different relationships to the river, bridges and architecture. Choose a short stretch for an easy downtown break or walk farther toward the lake; boat tours and indoor attractions are separate visits.

Entry and costs

The public walkway is free. Restaurants, boat tours, museums, rentals and event services along the river are separately operated and may charge admission or require reservations.

Visitor notes

The City lists the Riverwalk as free to the public and open 06:00–23:00. Check the City’s current page for notices before visiting; individual businesses, tour departures and event access follow their own schedules. The path runs below Upper Wacker Drive, so allow time to reach the river level and confirm the most convenient entry point on the City’s page.
