A World Heritage hilltop quarter of palace courtyards, uneven cobbles and views over the Danube.

What to expect

The Castle District brings together Buda’s former royal palace, civic quarter, church and lookout streets above the river. The public route passes courtyards such as Lion Courtyard and Hunyadi Courtyard, while the Budapest History Museum, National Gallery, St Stephen’s Hall and other interiors set their own admission and hours. The city visitor guide describes the wider Castle District as part of Budapest’s World Heritage setting.

Walking the public streets and outdoor courtyards is free. Museums, exhibitions, the funicular and some guided experiences charge separately; entry rules and opening hours belong to each operator.

Visitor notes

Expect cobbles and some uneven paving. The city visitor guide recommends approaching from Tabán for visitors with limited mobility or pushchairs; lifts connect toward the palace level, and the route to Holy Trinity Square is described as accessible for wheelchairs, though it has no tactile guidance. Free accessible toilets are listed at Csikós Square. This is a long hilltop area, not a single level courtyard.
