What to expect

Walk uphill from Wale Street through the public lanes of Bo-Kaap, a community whose history and present-day life are both part of the visit. Cape Town Tourism suggests exploring its shrines, mosques, markets and food traditions; the nearby museum and guided or audio tours have their own prices.

Walking the public streets does not require a permit and has no admission charge. The Bo-Kaap Museum, guided tours, food and craft purchases are separate.

Visitor notes

The neighbourhood has steep, cobbled roads and is home to local families. Keep noise low, do not block doorways, and ask before photographing residents or private homes. The museum at 71 Wale Street charges admission; check its current hours and prices separately.
