What to expect

Arpoador is a rocky headland at the edge of Ipanema, known for its open sea view and sunset gatherings. Riotur describes an 800-metre beach stretch between Copacabana Fort and the junction of Rua Francisco Otaviano and Avenida Vieira Souto, with the Arpoador stones as a natural viewpoint. The current photo shows the granite point with Rio's coastal mountains beyond it.

The public shoreline and viewpoint are free. Food, beach rentals, surf lessons and nearby fort admission are separate.

Visitor notes

The rocks are uneven and exposed to sea spray; use care on the stone and follow local safety directions. For swimming, check the Inea's current bathing-water bulletin and beach flags; it advises avoiding the sea for 24 hours after heavy rain and near drainage outlets. Riotur does not publish a fixed visiting schedule for the public headland.
